Crawford, John


John Crawford is a media artist, interactive performance director, technology developer and interaction designer.


Dance film, interactive performance, motion capture, documentary, digital arts.

Intersecting software with digital media and theatrical performance, Crawford creates imagistic animations closely integrated with dance. His projects explore embodied interaction, combining processed video, computer-generated animation, motion capture and real-time motion tracking. He originated the Active Space concept to describe his interactive performance systems that produce visuals and music in response to movement. His current interests include Urban Fabric, an interdisciplinary collaborative project conceived as a series of dance/media performances that reflect on physical presence in constructed environments. He is visiting professor of dance media at Beijing Dance Academy, where he recently presented Urban Fabric: Beijing, featuring his Active Space system. Other recent dance/media performances have included works at the Paris Music and Dance Conservatory and the keynote opening performance at the International Biennale of Contemporary Art in Prague. In 2005-06 he was a Digital Fellow at New York's Dance Theatre Workshop. In the Claire Trevor School of the Arts at UC Irvine, he teaches dance film, motion capture, telematic performance and digital arts. His projects been performed and exhibited across North America and in Europe, Asia and South America. As a software developer, his credits include projects for Microsoft, Adobe and other companies. As a theatre director and actor, he studied with Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York.
