Machine learning techniques for text mining and natural language processing (NLP) create new possibilities for enhancing classroom instruction. This
presentation will give an overview of four research projects related to texts and technologies in K-12 instruction, including studies that focus on reformatting of reading passages to improve comprehension, automated scoring and feedback on writing, largescale analysis of student writing on Google Docs, and automated agents for monitoring and stimulating computer-mediated discussion.


A light lunch will be served at 11:45. Talk begins at noon.


Dr. Mark Warschauer, professor, education and informatics & associate dean, School of Education

In addition to his teaching and administrative duties, Warschauer directs the Digital Learning Lab. He has been the inaugural editor of two
open access journals: Language Learning & Technology, launched in 1997, and AERA Open, to be launched next month. His recent books include Learning in the Cloud (Teachers College Press), Laptops and Learning (Teachers College Press), and Technology and Social Inclusion (MIT Press).
