Multidisciplinary Design Program
Multidisciplinary Design Program (MDP)
engages UCI undergraduate students from all disciplines in five-member design teams, co-mentored by at least two faculty mentors from different schools. Participants choose from a variety of innovative and creative design projects related to the areas of energy, environment, healthcare and culture.
Under the personal guidance of UCI faculty co-mentors, students gain first-hand experience and training in state-of-the-art facilities and techniques. Each selected team, along with its faculty mentors, provides an itemized budget, with Calit2 providing two-thirds of the funded amount for each project. Over the winter and spring quarters, the selected teams incorporate their multidisciplinary knowledge and skills in developing a solid design of the proposed project. Participants demonstrate the results of their work at the UCI Undergraduate Research Symposium in May and at additional demonstration events sponsored by Calit2.
This program is designed to help students develop the multidisciplinary skills and knowledge that will propel them into graduate studies or careers in fields that explore the connections between different concentrations. The MDP is a collaboration between Calit2 and UROP, the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program.
