Two UCI students working in CALIT2’s Carl Zeiss Center of Excellence won awards at this year’s Southern California Society for Microscopy and Microanalysis Symposium held at UCLA. The awards were given for the best student platform presentation and the best student poster.
Anh Duong, a student in Professor Dan Mumm’s research group, received a check for $500 for her presentation “3D Reconstruction of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Cathodes using FIB/SEM.” Shehreen Dheda, a student in Professor Farghalli Mohamed’s research group, received a check for $300 for her poster “The Application of Electron Backscatter Diffraction to Study Abnormal Grain Growth and Twinning in Nanocrystalline Nickel.” The prizes will support travel to Richmond, Va. for the Microscopy Society of America’s annual conference in July.
Duong and Dheda competed with students from other major local universities including UCLA, UC Riverside, Caltech and USC.
