March 09, 2010 –
Students can now apply for CALIT2’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships in Information Technology (SURF-IT). Faculty affiliates have submitted their projects for the ten week program which begins at the end of June. The program requires a full-time commitment by the students who will work under the guidance of the faculty mentor, post-doctoral researchers and graduate students. Fellows receive a $3000 stipend for their efforts.
Eligibility is based on the following criteria:
· Must be a high-achieving UCI undergraduate in any discipline who has a strong drive to pursue research and careers relating to information technologies;
· Achieved at least junior standing and will be a returning student next fall after the program ends;
· Completed at least one quarter of research under the guidance of a faculty mentor prior to the start of the program.
SURF-IT is designed to help students develop the knowledge and skills that will propel them into graduate studies or careers in the various multidisciplinary fields of telecommunications and information technology. In addition to the research experience, the fellows also participate in a series of seminars where they learn about each other’s projects. The program concludes at the end of August with each fellow giving a presentation about his/her contributions to the research project and what results were found.
The list of projects and on-line application process which ends Monday, April 12 can be found at UCI’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program website.
