October 20, 2010 –
In conjunction with its effort to establish a center for applied research on energy efficiency in plug-load appliances, CALIT2 is seeking proposals for evaluation by the California Energy Commission.
Proposals should focus on energy efficiency in electronic devices and other appliances for home and office use; they must be short (2-3 pages) and submitted by the end of October. Each proposal must include at least one UCI faculty member, and work on proposed research should occur during 2011.
Approximately $1 million in funding is expected to be available, enough to fund up to three projects. Those projects selected will require submission of fuller proposals later this year.
The CEC is especially interested in applied and translational research – work that addresses known practical problems. Projects should demonstrate or estimate real energy savings, and collaborations with utilities, manufacturers or the Irvine Smart Grid Project are welcome.
The CEC is particularly interested in proposals on the following topics:
- Set-top boxes
- Medical devices
- Energy efficiency-related behavioral studies
- Audio and sound systems
- Office equipment
- Smart power strips and home-area networks
- Software
The review process will be relatively informal; discussions with the Energy Commission will lead to detailed negotiations for some of the projects. All proposals will remain under consideration for possible future funding from various sources.
