The Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII) held a kickoff event Tuesday at CALIT2 for the California Regional Manufacturing Center (CARMC). More than 70 attendees from industry and academia attended the workshop, learning about the center’s capabilities to support the state’s manufacturers.
CARMC has two demonstration centers: CALIT2 at UC Irvine serves as the southern California site, while the northern California demonstration center is based at UC Berkeley.
“We are excited to be chosen as one of the demonstration centers,” CALIT2 Director G.P. Li said when welcoming the attendees. “Today you will learn more about how our coordinated effort can help you implement a smart manufacturing strategy for your facility.”
The U.S. Department of Energy established CESMII to work with industry to reduce the energy cost of manufacturing through the application of smart manufacturing technologies. These technologies include sensors, platforms, models and controls to harness the value of data in manufacturing to make better decisions.
“This workshop serves as a starting point to identify and prioritize the needs for smart manufacturing applications in the region,” Li added, noting that CALIT2 has the technology expertise and fabrication facilities to help with design and prototyping.
As a demonstration center, CALIT2 will offer coordinated access to national resources of CESMII, which is the ninth manufacturing institute established by the DoE. Headquartered in Los Angeles, CESMII brings together over $140 million in public-private investment focused on improving energy productivity and creating new jobs in U.S. manufacturing.
