June 06, 2019 –
The CALIT2 Advisory Board met on June 3 and 4 at CALIT2 UC Irvine for its semi-annual meeting. The 16-person board holds one meeting each January by teleconference. A second meeting, held at mid-year, alternates between the UC San Diego and UC Irvine CALIT2 facilities.
On the first night of the two-day meeting, board members were joined by deans and senior administrators from UCI for a tour of CALIT2 Irvine. The group visited two recently opened labs in the building: the Data Engineering ThinkTank and the TEMPR facility. The 3,000-square-foot ThinkTank is a high-performance computer lab and is the first site to offer 40G connection speed between two UC campuses (UCI and UCSD), allowing for unprecedented opportunities in the development of AI and machine learning exploration and research. The TEMPR Lab is a state-of-the-art facility for characterization of soft materials.
All three CALIT2 directors were on hand, including UCI division director G.P. Li, CALIT2 founding director Larry Smarr, and UCSD division director Ramesh Rao. The directors work closely to promote an integrated research and communications approach across the institute, building on UCSD’s and UCI’s complementary disciplinary strengths, technical professionals, and industry and community partners.
On the second day of the meeting, the directors shared progress reports followed by discussion. The meeting also focused on discussions on the future direction for CALIT2, and sustainability and business models.
The CALIT2 Advisory Board is comprised of distinguished members of academia, industry, government, and public policy with expertise relevant to CALIT’2s mission, guides institute strategic thinking, planning, and communications.
