The Multidisciplinary Design Program (MDP) engages UCI undergraduate students from all disciplines in five-member design teams, co-mentored by at least two faculty mentors from different schools. Participants choose from a variety of innovative and creative design projects related to the areas of energy, environment, healthcare and culture.
Under the personal guidance of UCI faculty co-mentors, students gain first-hand experience and training in state-of-the-art facilities and techniques. Each selected team, along with its faculty mentors, provides an itemized budget, with Calit2 providing two-thirds of the funded amount for each project. Over the winter and spring quarters, the selected teams incorporate their multidisciplinary knowledge and skills in developing a solid design of the proposed project. Participants demonstrate the results of their work at the UCI Undergraduate Research Symposium in May and at additional demonstration events sponsored by Calit2.
This program is designed to help students develop the multidisciplinary skills and knowledge that will propel them into graduate studies or careers in fields that explore the connections between different concentrations. The MDP is a collaboration between Calit2 and UROP, the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program.

(SURF-IoT)
Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows in the Internet of Things (SURF-IoT) provides a unique 10-week summer research opportunity for UCI undergraduates to become immersed in IoT-related research and applications. Participants have the opportunity to choose from a variety of challenging research projects.
Under the personal guidance of a UCI faculty mentor, students gain first-hand experience and training in state-of-the-art facilities and techniques. A series of seminars provides opportunities to build knowledge and enhance dialogue about telecommunication and information technology systems and applications. At the conclusion of the program, students share their research accomplishments by presenting their findings at the SURF-IT Poster Session and Closing Reception.
This program is designed to help students develop the knowledge and skills that will propel them into graduate studies or careers in the various, multidisciplinary fields of telecommunications and information technology.
