The Thermal, Elemental, Mechanical, Physical and Rheological (TEMPR) properties user facility is a world-class shared laboratory for the physical property characterization and elemental analysis of bulk and thin-film biological, soft and hard materials. TEMPR houses a comprehensive suite of state-of-the-art characterization instruments, including thermal analysis tools (DSC, TGA, simultaneous DSC/TGA with evolved gas analysis, DMA); a laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer equipped with a 193 nm pulsed excimer laser and autosamplers/autodiluters for ultra-trace elemental analysis; a combustion/pyrolysis analyzer for quantification of gas-forming elements tools for surface area, porosity, adsorption and density analysis; a universal testing system for stress-strain mechanical testing; rheometers for measuring the mechanical properties of soft materials, liquids, suspensions and slurries; and an advanced size exclusion chromatography system for the separation and characterization of polymers and nanomaterials. TEMPR will bring together researchers from all disciplines across campus and the region to develop new materials for applications in health, energy, semiconductor, aerospace, information technology and other areas of technology.
