The Visualization lab located on the second floor of the Calit2 building is a state-of-the-art research facility focused on novel display technologies, computational cameras and projectors, and projection-based augmented reality.
Projection-based AR provides the ability to view a large amount of data at a high resolution. The image is formed by several projectors, each of which covers a part of the projection surface. By observing specialized patterns from the projectors using one or more cameras, the lab researchers, lead by Professor Aditi Majumder, patented projection aggregation and integration software (PRAIS) provides seamless imagery that can cover any complex surface, creating a unique visual experience for the user. The technology transforms 3D objects or spaces of any shape and size, from cups and vases to cylinders, domes and rooms, into magical aesthetic spaces for shareable and immersive experience for multiple users. When using projectors, the technology turns any 3D shapes into a display.
Also in the lab, a multi-projector display utilizes camera-based calibration and custom algorithms to automatically align images and eliminate color variations. Each of the nine projectors connects wirelessly to a computer and a digital camera with a computer interface.
