Faculty and centers that partner with CALIT2 have made their mark on the news this week.
The Los Angeles Times on Monday published a front-page article, “UC Irvine takes video games to the next level,” highlighting the recently established Center for Computer Games & Virtual Worlds, headed by CALIT2 affiliates Magda El Zarki and Walt Scacchi. The center is supporting efforts to introduce a four-year undergraduate program in game science in fall 2010.
Also on Monday, the Wall Street Journal ran a piece detailing neuroscientist James Fallon’s efforts to assess his own family’s brain scans and DNA samples. “What’s on Jim Fallon’s mind?” describes his startling discovery. Fallon has used CALIT2’s HIPerWall on previous projects, including a successful attempt to identify genes associated with schizophrenia.
And on Tuesday, Dr. Ralph Clayman was named dean of the UC Irvine School of Medicine, pending regental approval. Dr. Clayman is a key player in an ongoing brainstorming partnership with CALIT2 that seeks to identify healthcare-related technology that could benefit physicians at UCI Medical Center.
