Sorooshian
UCI professor Soroosh Sorooshian, Distinguished Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth System Science, recently garnered prestigious international acclaim. The director of UCI’s Center for Hydrometeorology and Remote Sensing, and CALIT2 academic affiliate was awarded the 2008-2010 Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water’s Specialized Branch Prize for Water Resources Management and Protection.
Sorooshian is a member of the executive committee of the Water and Development Information for Arid Lands, a joint program of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the U.S. National Committee for the International Hydrological Programme.
He specializes in hydrometeorology, water resources systems and issues, climate studies and the use of remote sensing in the hydrologic cycle. A member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and the International Academy of Astronautics, he is also a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Geophysical Union, the American Meteorological Society and the International Water Resources Association.
Among Sorooshian’s many honors are the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, two Distinguished Engineering Educator Awards, and the 2009 award for Outstanding Professor in The Henry Samueli School of Engineering.
The Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water seeks to encourage the development of “proactive, practical, and cost-effective means of making water available to people wherever they may be.” Leading international scientists determine the winners biannually in each of five branches.
This year’s award ceremony will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on December 5, to coincide with the opening ceremony of the Fourth International Conference on Water Resources and Dry Environment. The award carries a cash prize as well as a gold medallion, trophy and certificate.
