Wanted: multidisciplinary research proposals in need of funding. Reward: up to $40,000 for projects that will evolve into significant multiyear, multidisciplinary projects or centers.
CALIT2, in conjunction with The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, announces for the second consecutive year its large-scale interdisciplinary research ignition initiative. The program is intended to stimulate development of comprehensive, externally funded research that supports the strategic interests of CALIT2 and the schools of engineering and computer sciences.
This initiative will provide seed funding for up to $40,000 each, for a period not to exceed two years, to support the creation of interdisciplinary research teams and the submission of extramural research proposals. Two groups received funding last year, during the first year of the Ignition program.
Proposals must be submitted by teams of at least three UCI faculty and/or professional research staff. Each funded project must produce a submitted proposal for a large-scale multidisciplinary project or center with real potential to be funded by sources outside of the University of California.
The deans and associate deans for research of the engineering and computer sciences schools, and G.P. Li, director of the UC Irvine division of CALIT2, will review the proposals. Judging criteria includes:
• the likelihood of attracting funding of at least $500,000 a year for a minimum of three years;
• the prospect of creating long-term, multidisciplinary collaboration;
• innovation, novelty and scientific value of the research;
• the project’s ability to impact society as well as the research field.
New collaborations will be given priority, and support for development and submission of the proposals to funding agencies will be available. Click here to read a full description of the initiative and a list of requirements.
“CALIT2 is pleased to again support this program, which encourages long-term cross-disciplinary research partnerships,” said Li. “We believe these multidisciplinary collaborations can produce inventive solutions to many of the issues facing society.”
Proposals are due by March 31, 2011 and should be submitted electronically in PDF form to Venita de Souza vdesouza@uci.edu. Awards will be announced by April 22, 2011.
