Collins: TA Professional Development and Mentoring

Two CALIT2-affiliated faculty members will be recognized for their excellence in undergraduate instruction by UC Irvine at the university’s 18th annual Celebration of Teaching on Thursday, May 26.

Phil Collins, associate professor of physics and astronomy, and a member of the CALIT2@UCI division council, was chosen from among 60 campus nominations. He is being honored for his mentoring and professional development of teaching assistants, and will receive a $1,000 contribution to his professional development account as well as an engraved award.

El Zarki: Excellence in Teaching/ICS

The TA Professional Development & Mentoring award is one of the celebration’s four top honors. The others are Professor of the Year, Lecturer of the Year, and Instructional Technology Innovation.

The awards are sponsored by the deans of the Division of Undergraduate Education and the Division of Graduate Education; the Office of Information Technology; and the Teaching, Learning & Technology Center.

The ceremony, at which Chancellor Michael Drake will give the welcoming address, will also recognize one professor from each of the 11 schools on campus. Magda El Zarki, professor of computer science and a CALIT2 participant, will be acknowledged by Dean Hal Stern from the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences for excellence in teaching.

The Celebration of Teaching is scheduled 4:30-6:30 p.m., Thursday, May 26, 2011 in the Student Center, Doheny Beach A&B. It is followed by a reception.

The event is open to the public but RSVPs are requested by May 17, 2011 to Ann Marie Walker, walkeram@uci.edu.
