UROP’s Said Shokair addresses last year’s SURF-IT students.
It’s almost summer, and at CALIT2, that means jumping into the SURF-IT.
For the 10th consecutive year, the institute’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Information Technology is poised to immerse a group of high-achieving undergraduates in mentor-guided, hands-on research. Ten UC Irvine students have been selected to participate in the competitive, 10-week program, which is co-sponsored by UCI’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program.
This year’s cohort includes students from electrical, chemical and biomedical engineering, as well as informatics, computer science, business and biology. Projects range from designing apps to implementing wireless sensor networks; from mathematically modeling vestibular systems to using Arduinos to monitor aquaponics; and from evaluating sustainability to improving graphene transfer for biological functions.
This year’s undergraduates, their majors (and their mentors) include:
• Soheil Akhavan Masouleh, electrical engineering (Hamid Jafarkhani)
• John Delshadi, informatics (Yunan Chen)
• Anita Gilbert, informatics (Gillian Hayes)
• Devin Held, computer science (Mark Warschauer)
• Joseph Mehrabi, business information management (Debra Richardson)
• Dominic Scarmardo, electrical engineering (Peter Burke)
• Vasu Sharma, biomedical engineering, pre-med (Andrei Shkel)
• Diane Shin, human biology (Warren Wiechmann)
• William Stone, computer game science (Andre van der Hoek)
• Stefan Wenthe, chemical engineering (Bill Tomlinson)
The program kicks off June 25 with an orientation session focused on project details and program expectations. “We are looking forward with great anticipation to our 10th SURF-IT program,” said CALIT2 Irvine Director G.P. Li. “We have a great group of students and some really challenging projects; it’s going to be an exciting and very productive summer.”
