Smart and Advanced Manufacturing Innovation in DoE

Sudarsan Rachuri, Federal Program Officer and Technology Manager at the Department of Energy (DoE) Advanced Manufacturing Office, spoke at CALIT2 Friday about Smart and Advanced Manufacturing Innovation in DoE.

Smart manufacturing, also referred to as Advanced Manufacturing, Digital Manufacturing, Cyber Physical Systems (CPS), and the Internet of Things (IoT), is an emerging field that combines physical systems with big data and intelligence, Rachuri said. It can mean different things to different people, but essentially it is about smartly extracting information from the system to improve overall efficiency of manufacturing. “Smart Manufacturing has the potential to fundamentally change how products are designed, manufactured, supplied, used, remanufactured and eventually retired,” he added.

His talk outlined the objectives of the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII). He also covered critical aspects of smart manufacturing, including reference architecture, verification, validation and uncertainty quantification, and standards and protocols.

Sudarsan Rachuri, Ph.D., is a Technology Manager in the Advanced Manufacturing Office, Office of Energy Efficiency Renewable Energy, U.S. Department of Energy. He is the Federal Program Manager for the CESMII. Prior to joining DOE, he was the program manager at NIST and also a research professor at George Washington University. He is currently a member of US VTAG for Systems Evaluation Group 7 – Smart Manufacturing. Rachuri is also an ASME Fellow and received the 2016 ASTM International President’s Leadership Award.
