The Fall 2017 session of “This is What a Scientist/Engineer Looks Like” was held in the CALIT2 auditorium, Wednesday, Oct. 25. The event was part of a series designed to advance excellence through a commitment to equity and diversity, and raise awareness about STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) opportunities for women and underrepresented minorities.
The program’s featured speaker, Irma Lawrence is a national program leader in the division of Community and Education at the National Institute of Food Agriculture, US Dept. of Agriculture (USDA). Lawrence shared information about opportunities offered by the USDA. The office oversees more than $9.2 million in programming and funding sources, with initiatives ranging from food safety to climate change and research support for STEM fields.
“Internships and funding are applicable across all areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics,” Lawrence said. ”We have many, many opportunities. We are 40,000 employees strong, with offices in every county and every state. There is opportunity everywhere.”
The USDA/HACU National Internship Program provides both undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to gain valuable professional federal experience that complements their education, Lawrence said.
