October 10, 2018 –

Nearly 250 students from four area high schools toured CALIT2 labs and met with dozens of manufacturing professions at “Manufacturing Day 2018,” held Tuesday at CALIT2. The nation-wide event encourages manufacturers to open their doors and inspire young people to pursue careers in manufacturing and engineering

The day-long program was hosted by CMTC (California Manufacturing Technology Consultants), Vital Link and CALIT2.

Richard Donovan, Assistant Director of Research Development, Samueli School of Engineering and Donald Bren School of Information & Computer Sciences, welcomed students, teachers and sponsors to the event, and shared updates about CALIT2’s efforts in developing technologies and tools for Smart Manufacturing. California State Assembly member Matthew M. Harper was the program’s keynote speaker.

Students from the California Academy of Math & Science, along with Valley, Cypress and Jordan high schools experimented with health-related devices developed within the eHealth Collaboratory, explored Fabworks maker lab, observed research activity in BiON cleanrooms, and got an up-close look at advanced techniques and services at LEXI, CALIT2’s state-of-the-art microscopy center.

Sponsors from 15 companies and organizations provided demonstrations of new technologies and offered information about future careers in manufacturing and engineering.

Manufacturing Day was first held in 2012. It is the nation’s largest one-day celebration of manufacturing, which focuses on showing young people, parents and educators the opportunities a career in manufacturing offers.
