Pathway to Implementing Smart Manufacturing

On Sept. 4 and 5, CALIT2 hosted a kickoff meeting for the DOE Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII) research roadmap project: “Establishing Smart Connected Workers Infrastructure for Enabling Advanced Manufacturing: A Pathway to Implement Smart Manufacturing for Small to Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs).

The Smart Connected Worker (SCW) project is being led by G.P. Li, director of CALIT2, Irvine. Li has brought together a national team of industry, national lab and academic researchers to develop affordable, scalable, accessible and portable (ASAP) systems to empower workers in small-to-medium enterprises with actionable intelligence to optimize workflows for reducing energy consumption and increasing energy productivity.

The project team consists of UCI/CALIT2, California State University Northridge, San Diego Super Computing center, Honeywell Corporation, General Mills, Aerospace Corporation and Atollogy along with support from Southern California Edison.

Over the next 18 months, the project team will be deploying SCW systems throughout the Integrated Nano Research Facility at CALIT2 in preparation for field trials at Honeywell, General Mills and Aerospace Corporation. The overall goal of the program is to develop these SCW systems from open source software distributions and custom off the shelf hardware systems in order to drive down costs and increase resilience with respect to energy grid dynamics.
