February 24, 2020 –

The 6th Annual International Symposium on Technology in Medical Data and Devices was held at CALIT2, Monday, Feb. 10.

Hosted by CALIT2, the event brings together innovators and entrepreneurs, along with academic and industry leaders interested in the ever-evolving medical device market and the challenges new technologies may produce.

Devices are increasingly at the core of collecting patient data, with the goal of providing added value and personalization. As a result, privacy and security issues continue to be a concern for consumers, regulators and businesses. Event speakers shared practical information designed to help innovators successfully move their research from the laboratory to the biomedical device market.

Travis Smith from DeviceAlliance offered competitive advantage insight to symposium participants, advising them to seek “proactive relationship building. Be part of the discussion, not the reader after the fact.” He further recommended, “Get out of your office.”

The symposium offered a session of experts focused on today’s medical devices. Speakers included: Travis Smith, DeviceAlliance; Brent Noblitt, Nobllitt & Rueland; Alvin Viray, UCI Applied Innovation; and Michael Guilliana, Knobbe Martens.

A later session titled “Data, data & more data” featured presentations from Peter Chang, UCI Center for Artificial Intelligence in Diagnostic Medicine; and Curtis Huffmire, Knobbe Martens.

The event concluded with a fast-paced Tech Startup Showcase that allowed innovators 10 minutes to present their most advanced technology. Startups included: Francis Duhay, Koa Accel; Andrew Ninh, DocBot; Michael Chu, Makani Science;
Ethan Nguyen, Siminsights and Gregg Klang, Cern Corp.
