Professor Athina Markopoulou has been selected as the next director of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology at UC Irvine effective July 1. Markopoulou became affiliated with CalIT2 shortly after coming to campus in 2006 as an assistant professor in the department of electrical engineering and computer science. During her nearly two decades on campus, Markopoulou has taken on greater leadership roles, including serving as chair of her EECS department and then as associate dean for graduate and professional studies in the Samueli School of Engineering. She is also the director of ProperData, a center-scale NSF SaTC Frontiers project, and the inaugural director of the new “Engineering+ Society Institute: Engineering AI for Society.” She earned her Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.
Markopoulou’s research interests include privacy and data transparency for web/mobile/IoT as well as emerging technologies; network measurement and traffic analysis; and the interface of technology and policy in these topics. She has published over 100 papers, several of which with distinctions, and has graduated over 20 Ph.D. students and postdocs. She is an IEEE Fellow and a Distinguished Member of the ACM.
Markopoulou replaces Professor G.P. Li as the fourth director of CALIT2. Li, also an electrical engineering and computer science professor, served as the Irvine division director for 18 plus years.
