More than fifty CalIT2 affiliated faculty and researchers attended the holiday networking lunch in the building’s festively decorated atrium.
The CalIT2 Building atrium was adorned with lights, garland and even a tree for the annual Institute’s holiday party. Building residents and affiliated researchers enjoyed a networking lunch that included all of the seasonal fare. This was the first holiday gathering hosted by the new CalIT2 Director Athina Markopoulou, professor of electrical engineering and computer science.

The relatively new CalIT2 Director Athina Markopoulou gathered attendees and gave a short talk on her plans for the future.
“Thank you all for joining us today as we enjoy each other’s company and celebrate another year of accomplishments,” Markopoulou told the group. “I appreciate your engagement with CalIT2 and only hope to strength your involvement as we grow our research enterprise in the coming years.”
As of July, Markopoulou took on the Institute’s leadership role. She explained to the holiday gathering attendees that she plans to meet with everyone one-to-one in the new year. “I will launch an official strategic planning process and I hope that you will engage and help create a community so together we are more than the sum of our parts,” she said. “It will take time, but it is our responsibility and an opportunity.”
The holiday gathering wasn’t complete until the traditional raffle drawing was held. Five lucky winners whose tickets were randomly drawn received an assortment of holiday treats to enjoy with family and friends.
