DDP Part 1: B2B Business Plan Creation (Project 38)
Company: Asahi Group Holdings
Project overview: The Drink Diary Pro (DDP) is a joint project between Asahi and UCI that was designed to help users have a healthier and more mindful relationship with alcohol. Through an integrated mobile and a wearable app, users can easily and discreetly track their consumption and gain insights into how their drinking habits impact their health over time. In 2025, the project has made significant headway on both AI and app development, bringing the DDP closer to market readiness.
This project offers an opportunity for students to gain experience in market analysis, product positioning, and business planning, and to apply strategic thinking for the success of a real-world product.
Objectives
1. Conduct a strategic analysis to identify and recommend the most promising industry/sector for DDP’s initial market launch
2. Create a business plan, including a user acquisition strategy and go-to-market plan tailored to the recommended industry
3. Provide prioritized recommendations on additional features or refinements to enhance the DDP’s relevance for the chosen industry

DDP Part 2: Mobile App Enhancement (Project 39)

Project overview: The Drink Diary Pro (DDP) is a joint project between Asahi and UCI that was designed to help users have a healthier and more mindful relationship with alcohol. While the current version includes several core features, the next phase of development will focus on enhancing the app’s ability to assess user well-being—particularly in relation to driving safety and next-day productivity. As the app is being positioned for B2B markets, an intuitive and data-rich dashboard will also be essential for launch readiness.

Orange County Internship Directory and Social Media Campaign (Project 54)
Company: CEO Leadership Alliance Orange County
Project overview: The project goal is to build a comprehensive directory of internship opportunities and promote them through a coordinated social media campaign. The directory will feature 100 companies across MedTech, Professional/Financial Services, and Aerospace/Defense, curated for inclusion on the Brighter Futures website, a regional hub connecting students to career pathways in Orange County, CA.
By promoting these opportunities through engaging digital content, the project seeks to increase traffic to the Brighter Futures website by 25% and expand awareness of local internship options among students, educators, and employers.

CLAOC Stakeholder Engagement Dashboard and Data Visualization (Project 57)

Project overview: This data-driven project is designed to strengthen program engagement and amplify community impact across the CEO Leadership Alliance Orange County (CLAOC) network. By leveraging data from multiple sources — including meetings (in-person and virtual), event attendance, program participation, LinkedIn activity, email click-throughs, and message interactions — the project will develop a Stakeholder Engagement Dashboard that visualizes how stakeholders connect, participate, and collaborate.
The dashboard will serve as a central tool for tracking engagement trends, identifying highly active stakeholders, and uncovering opportunities to deepen participation. Using a custom Engagement Rating System, the project will transform raw data into actionable insights that inform CLAOC’s strategic outreach and community-building efforts.
Ultimately, this initiative will help the organization better understand, measure, and grow its impact within Orange County’s innovation ecosystem.

Project overview: From January 5 to May 31, the student will analyze public labor market data (e.g., O*NET, BLS) to identify emerging AI-related workforce skills. They will draft a memo summarizing key findings and use these insights to recommend adjustments to CLAOC’s workshops and online modules to better address evolving skill needs. This project supports CLAOC’s mission to strengthen workforce readiness and align training with future job demands.

Drone Deployed Microsensors (Project 7)

Project overview: DWT has developed a Microsensor system deployed via drones, called DropPuck System. Modular Drone in a Box (Project 8)
Company: Design West Technologies
Project overview: DWT’s current drone prototype is modular and can be modified from UGV to UAV to fix wing within few minutes. The student will work on maturing and ruggedizing this drone and prepare an Iteration 2 prototype. The student will work closely with R&D engineers and scientists and have support on mechanical and electrical development tasks. The drone will further serve as platform for ML algorithm development.

Gatekeeper Systems, Inc. – Using artificial intelligence to detect abnormal behavior and enhance theft prevention (Project 47)
Company: Gatekeeper Systems, Inc.
Project overview: Gatekeeper Systems offers Purchek, a leading security solution that combats retail theft by preventing unauthorized cart exits and protecting merchandise. The company plans to enhance Purchek’s capabilities by integrating advanced Machine Learning algorithms. These algorithms will predict and detect theft events by analyzing shopper behavior, leveraging data from both vision-based systems and Large Language Models (LLMs). Gatekeeper Systems possesses a vast dataset of tens of millions of videos, collected from a fleet of over 16 million wheels in the field, for training these machine models.
The project aims to develop video-based machine models capable of detecting suspicious shopper behavior in near real-time. A key objective is to integrate Large Language Models (LLMs) to enhance prediction accuracy by providing semi-structured metadata. The system must be able to return results quickly, enabling timely intervention to prevent theft events.

Company Overview and Goals
Gaudi Technology is a pioneer in 3D-printed construction solutions dedicated to transforming the global building industry through automation, sustainability, and innovation. Our goal is to develop an integrated ecosystem that combines advanced construction robotics, intelligent materials (such as our proprietary Gaudicrete), and AI-driven design to make construction faster, greener, and more affordable.
Project Purpose
The proposed project aims to bridge academic research and real-world innovation by engaging students in the advancement of Gaudi’s 3D printing technology. Students will have the opportunity to analyze and upgrade our existing 3D printer hardware and software systems to enhance precision, stability, and automation performance.
This project also serves as part of our preparation to establish a 3D printer manufacturing facility in the United States, supporting local production, testing, and technology transfer.
Expected Student Deliverables
By the end of the program, students are expected to deliver:
Hardware or software improvement proposals supported by experimental data or simulation;
A prototype, digital model, or updated control module demonstrating technical enhancement;
A final report and presentation summarizing the design process, validation results, and recommendations for implementation in the U.S. production line.

Glass 3D Printing (Project 11)

Project overview: Glass-ceramics have long been used in dentistry for creating esthetic dental restorations and have played a key role in the digital transformation of dentistry with the advent of CAD/CAM technologies. The development of 3D-printed glass has the potential to further enhance efficiency by reducing chairside time, simplifying processing, and improving patient satisfaction. The overarching goal of this project is to investigate the potential for 3D printing dental-grade glass-ceramics. The student researcher working on this project will gain hands-on experience in processing glasses and glass-ceramics, synthesizing printable resins, and materials characterization.

Machinable Glass-Ceramics (Project 12)

Project overview: Glass-ceramics are widely used in dentistry for their excellent aesthetics, high strength, and rapid processing into restorations through CAD/CAM technology. While CAD/CAM has enabled chairside fabrication, the demand for new glass-ceramics that allow faster milling cycles persists. This project aims to develop glass-ceramics with improved machinability over current state-of-the-art materials. The student will gain fundamental knowledge of glass chemistry, along with hands-on experience in glass and glass-ceramic processing, as well as materials characterization techniques.

Novel CAD/CAM Resin Composite Block with High Mechanical Properties (Project 17)

Project overview: This project will develop a novel CAD/CAM resin composite block with high mechanical properties using composite and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) technologies.
The application of computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) in dentistry for indirect dental restorations has remarkably increased during the last decade. Compared to glass-ceramics/ceramics, CAD/CAM composites blocks are easily fabricated and repaired, they have better machinability and thus lower tendency to marginal chipping, However, composite blocks generally are still not as strong as glass-ceramics/ceramics materials. Therefore, new CAD/CAM resin composite block with improved mechanical properties is highly desirable. As composite block become popular and market share increase in the dental indirect restoration, this project will strength our company “In-office” (.io) system to enable dental professionals to have more choices to produce same-day restorations like crowns and bridges.

ZrO2 based ceramic composites for dental applications. (Project 22)

Project overview: This project mainly focuses on development of zirconia oxide based full ceramic composites for dental applications. These class composites aim to obtain high translucency and better machinability performance. For that several compositions and sintering protocols will be tested and investigated in terms of Hardness, strength, fracture toughness, translucency and dynamometer load during milling.
Modality: In-Person
Resources required: tests will be performed in house with our equipment, such as microhardness indenter, milling machine, UV/VIS spectrophotometer, furnaces and pressure casting machines.

Sr/Ti Doped YSZ for Machinable Ceramics (Project 42)
Company: Glidewell Dental
Project overview: Highly machinable ceramics are incredibly desirable for improving the processing time for dental restorations which will allow dentists to provide patients same day visits. This project focuses on the development and testing of YSZ doped with Sr and Ti for the purpose of improving machinability. The project will include materials characterization techniques such as SEM, sample preparation, indentation methods, 3-pt bend test, ceramic synthesis and more.
Modality: In-Person
Resources required: Will provide a desk and laptop with all applications needed and laboratory PPE.
Skills required: Proficiency in Microsoft office, specifically Excel and PowerPoint. Strong organizational skills and some knowledge of materials science is preferred.
Hesse Mechatronics – Interconnection Intern (Project 25)

Hydrosat Inc. – Optical Sensor Integration and Test (Project 32)
Company: Hydrosat Inc.
Project overview: This project involves working on the assembly, integration, and test of a visible and longwave infrared sensor to be used for space based remote sensing to produce water stress measurements and watering recommendations for the agriculture industry.
Modality: Hybrid
Resources required: Students will need access to Python or another analysis tool (e.g. Matlab, Excel) as well as documentation resources (e.g. MS Word, PPT, etc.). Students will have the opportunity to work in the lab with hardware if their schedule permits. All tools/resources for hands on work will be provided on site by Hydrosat.
Skills required: Hydrosat is seeking students with a background in any of the following fields: electrical engineering, firmware/software, mechanical engineering, optical design. Hydrosat intends on providing mentoring/training to help the students get up to speed in order to succeed in supporting this program.
IPCMobile – MaglinQ+ & UHF RFID R&D (Project 48)

Project overview: Provide Research and Development assistance around two of our most promising Product Roadmap technologies for mobile Enterprise solutions. The goal is to: 1) develop working prototypes that incorporate MaglinQ+ USB-C magnetic-based connectivity between a host device and IPCMobile Smart Device and 2) develop working prototypes using a custom connector between a IPCMobile Smart Device with UHF RFID and an External antenna for long range UHF performance.

Resources required: IPCMobile will provide the toolsets and hardware development kits that will allow the Intern to conduct research surrounding the MaglinQ+ and UHF RFID technologies that have been planned for our mobility product roadmap devices. The scope of the Internship will also include breadboarding hardware prototypes and conducting characterization testing to help guide the direction of development of these technologies.
Skills required: Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineering knowledge would be most useful (on-site Engineering guidance will be available daily). Experience with prototyping (3D printing, soldering, etc) would also be useful but not required as we could help the Intern develop those skills.

KPFF – AI-Driven Automation for Structural and Seismic Engineering (Project 53)

Project overview: AI-Driven Automation for Structural and Seismic Engineering streamlines data extraction from drawings and specs, model preprocessing, analysis workflow automation, and postprocessing. It embeds these capabilities in daily workflows to cut manual effort and error and to shorten analysis and documentation cycles. KPFF is already advancing several of these initiatives through internal pilots, while additional modules will be initiated in the next phase. Deliverables include a document parsing and extraction tool; model preparation and conversion utilities, ground-motion scaling processes, and interactions between different softwares; a QA/QC assistant aligned with code-compliance procedures and company standards. The project supports KPFF’s mission by increasing speed and reliability, standardizing outputs, and freeing engineers to focus on higher value design decisions that improve seismic resilience.

Monitour AI – AI-Powered Video Surveillance Platform – Real-Time Threat Detection and Analytics (Project 23)
Company: Monitour AI
Project overview: Monitour is an AI-powered remote surveillance platform designed to enhance security for commercial and residential properties. Instead of relying on costly on-site security guards, Monitour uses advanced computer vision to monitor live camera feeds in real time; detecting loitering, fire, vandalism, and other suspicious activity. The system processes RTSP camera streams through our edge devices using AI models trained to identify threats and trigger alerts. Our remote monitoring team then verifies and responds instantly through sirens, lights, or direct communication with property managers and law enforcement when needed.
Monitour primarily serves property management companies, retail centers, apartment complexes, industrial parks, and commercial buildings, offering them a scalable, cost-effective alternative to traditional security while providing detailed analytics and daily activity summaries for better operational insight.
The project focuses on advancing the Monitour platform through AI development, software integration, and UX/UI enhancements. Interns will help develop and optimize components that allow for:
-Real-time video analytics (fire, loitering, and intrusion detection) using computer vision and machine learning.
-Backend systems for managing and storing event logs, alerts, and performance metrics.
-Frontend dashboards for operators to visualize live camera feeds, analytics, and system alerts.

• Hands-on experience working on teams designing hardware
• Passion for, and knowledge of, aerospace and space technology

Experience with Mechanical Designs including:
• Mechanical design and drafting
• 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, Catia)
• GD&T and tolerance stack-ups
OR
Experience with Electrical Systems including:
• PCB design, layout and/or testing
• Lab experience with oscilloscopes, DMMs, power supplies, and logic analyzers
• Embedded systems and microcontroller implementation and programming
• High performance digital processors, FPGAs, memory chips, or network switches

Project overview: Candidates will familiarize themselves with our data structure and demonstrate understanding of the database through modularized practical assignments; • Expanding our database using external sources • Scraping websites for specific information, such as identifying new or trending restaurants and extracting their menus and nutritional data • Apply deterministic techniques to improve user health analytics • Establish a comprehensive clustering system to provide insightful personal recommendations • Design AI applications deeply integrated with inhouse/third-party LLMs to fully exploit processed dataset in production level
