CALIT2 was well represented at UC Irvine’s “Engage UCI” celebration and awards ceremony earlier this month.
The daylong event showcased the university’s community engagement successes and explored new opportunities for campus-community collaborations. It included workshops, a community service and internship fair, poster presentations and five awards – two of which were collected by CALIT2-affiliated faculty, staff and partners.
OCTANe@UCI and OCTANe were presented with the Campus-Community Partnership award, which recognizes campus and community groups that work together to generate improvements in communities and in the lives of families. CALIT2 has an ongoing collaboration with both groups. The award was accepted by OCTANe@UCI’s Tanya Zabalegui and OCTANe’s Luis Vasquez and Cynthia Bemis.

Doctoral candidate Joel Ross accepted on behalf of Tomlinson, who was out of town.
Informatics professor Bill Tomlinson was honored with the Engaged Scholar Award for his efforts to advance students’ civic and service learning, and his contributions to the public good. Tomlinson, whose research focuses on using information technology to increase environmental awareness, has developed several user-friendly platforms that encourage novel approaches to global environmental issues.
Engage UCI: A Celebration of Community Collaboration was sponsored by the UCI Community Outreach Partnership Center; the Division of Undergraduate Education; the Office of the Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs; the Center for Service in Action; The Paul Merage School of Business; Community and Government Relations; Division of Graduate Education; and the University of California Asian American Pacific Islander Policy Multi-Campus Research Program.
