SURF-IT, the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Information Technology, is again accepting applications from UCI undergraduate students who want to gain hands-on experience in IT-related research.
Faculty members have submitted 14 multidisciplinary summer research projects for potential SURF-IT Fellows to choose from. The application deadline is Monday, May 2, and the program begins Monday, June 20.
A collaboration between CALIT2 and the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), SURF-IT provides a unique 10-week opportunity for UCI undergraduates. The program is designed to help students develop the knowledge and skills that will propel them into graduate studies or careers in various multidisciplinary fields of telecommunications and information technology. SURF-IT Fellows will receive a stipend of $2,000.
The program, which concludes August 26, requires a full-time commitment from students, who will work under the guidance of UCI faculty mentors, and post-doctoral researchers and/or graduate students.
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
• Be a high-achieving UCI undergraduate in any discipline who has a strong drive to pursue research and careers relating to information technologies;
• Have achieved at least junior standing and be a returning student next fall after the program ends;
• Have completed at least one quarter of research under the guidance of a faculty mentor prior to the start of the program.
Students will gain first-hand experience and training in state-of-the-art facilities and techniques. A mandatory series of seminars will provide opportunities to build knowledge and enhance dialogue about telecommunications and information technology systems and applications. At the conclusion of the program, students will share their research accomplishments by presenting their findings at the SURF-IT Poster Session and Closing Reception.
This year’s research projects cover a wide range of topics, including social media and gaming, cluster computing, microfluidics, interactive media development and materials science.
