On June 28, the eight highly motivated, high-achieving UCI undergraduates, selected as 2017 SURF-IoT Fellows, met for an orientation lunch at CALIT2.
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in the Internet of Things (SURF-IoT), provides a unique 10-week summer research opportunity for UCI undergraduates to become immersed in research and applications related to the Internet of Things.
The program is co-sponsored by UROP and CALIT2. It is designed to help students develop the knowledge and skills that will propel them into graduate studies or careers in the various multidisciplinary fields related to IoT. Under the personal guidance of a UCI faculty mentor, students will gain first-hand experience and training in state-of-the-art facilities and techniques.
UROP director, Said Shokair welcomed the newest group of SURF-IoT fellows and offered advice to succeed in the program. “Manage your relationship with your mentors,” he said. ”You’re here to take initiative. Open your eyes. This is an opportunity that will open doors.”
Shokair introduced G.P. Li, CALIT2 director. Li encouraged the students to “appreciate critical thinking and not worry about making mistakes.”
A series of lunchtime seminars will provide opportunities to build knowledge and enhance dialogue about IoT systems and applications. These seminars are open to the public. For dates and times, please visit the CALIT2 event listings.
At the conclusion of the program, students will be prepared to share their research accomplishments by presenting their findings at the SURF-IoT Symposium.
