Speakers and panelists at the winter 2019 session of “This Is What a Scientist/Engineer Looks Like”
The Winter 2019 session of “This Is What a Scientist/Engineer Looks Like” was held at CALIT2, Wednesday, Jan. 30. The event, part of a series designed to advance excellence through a commitment to equity and diversity, raises awareness about careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)
Wednesday’s program, titled “Moving into Great STEM Internships and Research” focused on insider knowledge from individuals who have made successful professional transitions.
The program began with 10-minute “mini-talks.” Graduating senior and SACNAS (Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science) member Miguel Ochoa spoke about his experiences as a double major in Bio and Chicanx studies, and offered advice for engaging in productive research. UCI Chancellor’s ADVANCE Postdoctoral Scholar Bonnie Cuthbert discussed her current research and the application process for UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship/UC Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellowship.
Keynote speaker, Catherine Morgan, a software engineer at Blizzard Entertainment, spoke about her trajectory as a woman in a computer science career, and shared insights about how students might get an internship at Blizzard Entertainment.
This Is What a Scientist/Engineer Looks Like is designed to be of particular interest to women and underrepresented students with an interest in pursuing careers in STEM. The program allows undergraduate students the opportunity to interact with panelists and learn about campus services and support in STEM.
The Office of Access & Inclusion along with Student Achievement Guided by Experience (SAGE) Scholars, Division of Career Pathways, UROP, WICS were also on hand to provide students with information about how to best prepare for successful internships and/or research opportunities.
